Peter the great, who was czar- or emperor- of Russia tried to change the fact that Russian technology and science lagged from their European rivals. He made impressive strides toward modernizing Russia
Russia began to industrialize towards the end of the century and when they did it resulted in harsh working conditions, low wages and other hardships where the reasons for the peoples anger toward the czar who ruled. This was also one of the reasons for the Russian revolution in 1917.
Rapid industrialization became a major goal for the Soviet planning and farming became an industry under Stalin. The soviet union created enormous collective farms on witch large terms of Laborberers were gathered to work. People were moved to farms by thousands. By 1939 nearly nine out of ten farms were collectives.
The Mongols controlled the region until the 1500s, when Ivan the Great, the powerful prince of Moscow, put an end to their rule Russia began to expand to the East.
By the time World War II broke out in 1939, Joseph Stalin had taken over the leadership of the USSR. In 1941 he led the Soviet Union in the fight against Nazi Germany. The war dragged on and the relation between the Soviet Union and its Allies began to worsen.
