  • The Salem tragedy, which is about to begin in these pages developed from a paradox. It is a paradox in whose grip we still live, and there is no prospect yet that we will discover its resolution.
  • aye, sir. I pray for her.
  • go directly home and speak nothing of unnatural causes.
  • uncle, the rumor of witchcraft is all about; you'd best go down and deny it yourself
  • John, you are not open with me. You saw her with a crowd you said. Now you -
  • I'll plead with honesty no more, Elizabeth.

  • I have no knowledge of it; the bible speaks of witches, as I will not deny them
