  • Sediment is small, solid pieces of different materials coming from living things or rocks.
  • Erosion is the process where running water, ice, or wind carry away little pieces of broken-up rock.
  • Weathering is when the effects of freezing and thawing ice, plant roots, acid, and some other forces on the rock(s).
  • Deposition is the process where sediment settles out of wind or water that is/was carrying it.
  • Cementation is when dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles of sediment together. 
  • Compaction is a process that presses sediments together.
