  • I have to work, but have fun Clare!
  • It's very important! I might get a raise at my job.
  • **sigh** You work too much!
  • Are you sure you can't come to the movie with me?
  • I have to work, but have fun Clare!
  • OH NO! My papers!
  • OH NO! My papers!
  • The story begins in Tom Benecke's apartment on Lexington Avenue, New York. The main character's wife, Clare, is getting ready to go to a movie, but Tom is unable to go because he is working on a proposal for his job.
  • OH NO! THE WINDOW CLOSED!!
  • After Clare leaves, Tom realizes that several sheets from his desk were flying in his office, and one yellow paper had been pushed out the window. This scares Tom because the paper included the information for his promotion and it would take him months to repeat the data.
  • HELPPP!! I'M UP HERE!
  • OH NO! THE WINDOW CLOSED!!
  • Tom decides to go out onto the window ledge of his 11th story apartment building to retrieve the yellow paper. The window was difficult to open at the beginning of the story, and we will see that it plays a significant part in the remainder of the story.
  • As Tom is out on the ledge of his apartment trying to retrieve his paper, the window to his apartment closes and Tom is unable to open it! He is stuck outside!
  • Tom tries several different methods of getting the attention of the people below him. Tom tries to light 3 letters that were in his pocket, but that didn't work, and then he tried to drop coins from his pocket, but that also didn't work.
  • In a final attempt, Tom smacks the window with his fist as he yells his wife's name "CLARE!" The window finally opens and Tom realizes that he needs to spend more time with his wife. He goes into the apartment and goes to watch the movie with his wife. The paper flies out the window once again, but Tom just laughs.
