  • During The Starving Time in 1609 the settlers in Jamestown were struggling to survive through the Winter. Without any food or clean water the settlers in Jamestown had to resort to eating their dogs, cats, horses and even their shoes/boots.
  • Political
  • Since Jamestown is so far away from England we had to make our own Government Which was The House of Burgesses.
  • In Jamestown we learned to make money from farming Tobacco also known as the Cash Crop. Soon Smoking became popular back in England.
  • It was surprising that Jamestown was a success because after drought the Starving Time, Indian attacks and Disease Jamestown survived and became a permanent settlement.
  • The settlers in Jamestown had to live in a swamp where there is fertile soil which is good for farming and building.
  • Jamestown and The James River were both named after King James 1.
