American and French soldiers, led by Hamilton, Washington, and Rochambeau, marched toward Yorktown, surrounding the British from the land. They arrived and began to dig large trenches to hide in during the battle.
In Chesapeake Bay, French ships stood guard to prevent the British from fleeing to the east.

After a week of fighting, the British surrendered and marched out of Yorktown. Washington negotiated the terms of surrender, and the newly freed Americans rejoiced.
