At first General Cornwallis sent British troops to attack Charlottesville because the Virginia government was meeting there.
After that many officials including Thomas Jefferson had to leave Virginia so that they can escape General Cornwallis.
Then Marquis de Lafayette, a French leader commanded American troops to fight back at the British. That caused General Cornwallis to retreat to the Yorktown peninsula.
After General Cornwallis retreated Washington and his allies trapped General Cornwallis on the Yorktown peninsula.
They had trapped General Cornwallis and he had no escape. They blocked all paths on water and land. Cornwallis was running out of supplies too.
Finally after several weeks Cornwallis surrendered to Washington's Continental Army.
