On page 60, the author describes how the narrator's parents met. Her mother was injured and in the hospital, and her father was a doctor. He taught her mother how to read and write during her time in the hospital, and the text says that since then her mother was never without a book.
On page 63 the texts describes a fire. When the narrator was 7 years old, her house caught fire while she was asleep, and the fire department could not get up the stairs inside the house to rescue her.
Since the fire department could not save the narrator on page 63, her mother decided to rescue her on her own. She climbed into her daughter's window and held her close as she brought her back down.
