Ralph with the conch believes in establishing a society where everyone is heard by use of the conch while Jack wishes to have all authority. This leads Ralph to being open to hearing all people on the island to be fair.
I want to be the chief!
We have to keep a fire going so someone can rescue us!
Ralph knows the importance of keeping a fire going to signal someone but Jack knows he can become more influential than Ralph if he becomes a respected hunter. Thus, he ignores Ralph's insistence on maintaining a fire on the mountain.
I'd rather go hunting!
Ralph and Piggy begin dreaming of home, which strengthens Ralph's resolve to find rescue.
After seeing what the boys believe to be "the beast," Ralph becomes a little more lenient with Jack's ideas, which will come back to haunt him later.
I guess we should hunt the beast down!
I told you hunting was important!
After the boys mistake Simon for the beast and kill him with Jack leading the frenzy, Ralph realizes how far Jack is willing to go to gain respect and leadership. Ralph knows Jack is becoming dangerous.
We have killed the beast! Ralph could never have done it!
When Ralph is finally rescued, he knows that the goal that he has worked so hard towards and almost lost his life for has been accomplished, as well as remembering the losses of Simon and Piggy, and you see he gives into being emotional when finding a grownup.
