55 delegates from 12 states arrived in Philadelphia on May 25, 1787

James Madison the " father of the constituition proposed the Virginia plan, a plan that called for a strong national government with 3 branches. William Patterson drafted the New jersey plan which called for the protection of smaller states

9/10's of the slaves in the colonies lived in the south. The southerners argued that these slaves should be counted as part of the population so they could get more representatives.
The first thing they did was name George Washington the president of the convention. Washington, being the most famous man in the colonies was the clear choice.
James Wilson proposed that their be a person serve as the chief executive, this brought back memories of King George. Edmund Randolph proposed three different chief executives
The delegates compromised and ended up choosing a plan that had a 2- house congress, The House of Representatives and the Senate.
On September 17, 1787, the delegates completed the Constitution.

The delegates finally decided that a single executive would be best. They had trouble figuring out how this person would feel be picked though. They decided that a special group of people called the electoral college choose.
Many delegates did not agree with the Constitution and didn't sign it, but Ben Franklin one of the smartest men in the colonies declared "it was a new day dawning for the United states.
