In the beginning of the story, Grendel comes out of the marsh and bogs, where he lives, hoping to kill anyone on his trip to Herot.
Grendel kills a man and then grabs Beowulf in his claws and thinks he is sleeping.
Grendel was grabbed by Beowulf and Beowulf's friends try to help him and protect him.
Beowulf's friends could not hurt Grendel or kill him.
But Beowulf could hurt Grendel and then Grendel would die.
The King of the Danes is happy because Beowulf killed Grendel and the Danish people don't have to be worried about Grendel anymore.
