Vesalius was born as Andries van Wesel, on the 31st December 1514, in Brussels.

Vesalius started to study art at the university of Lueven in 1528, but he changed his mind and joined the military in 1533, where he started to take an interest in anatomy.
He went back to Lueven and graduated soon after. He then moved to the University of Padua to studt for his medical doctorate, which he received in 1537.
Vesalius was appointed chair of surgery at Padua, and gave lectures on anatomy at other Universities in the area.
Vesalius realised that all of Galen's findings were not from human anatomy, but from pigs. He got permission from the local congregation to dissect a dead criminal, and he found that many of Galen's Ideas were wrong.
