  • Theme Subject: Racism Racial discrimination regards African-Americans of having no value or less importance to society than white people.
  • Tom Robinson was jailed for a crime a white person committed.
  • Theme Subject: Courage People who have courage stand their ground when faced with hostility or opposition to what is morally right.
  • Mr. Raymond uses his drunkenness as an excuse to hang around black people because it is not socially acceptable to be around them with fair judgement.
  • The town immediately assumes the black man is guilty, and they mob the jail. Atticus sits outside to protect Tom Robinson.
  • 98 pound Mrs. Dubose has had an addiction to morphine, but before she passes she stops using. This is an act of courage, and for this Atticus says "She was the bravest person I ever knew."
