1 The poem begins with the Highwayman visiting his love, Bess, for one brief moment.
He whistled a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there But the landlord’s black-eyed daughter, Bess, the landlord’s daughter, Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair
2 The Highwayman promises to come back to visit Bess tomorrow night after he steals more money.
“One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I’m after a prize to-night, But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light
3 Instead of the Highwayman coming the next night, the very mean Red Coats show up instead.
A red-coat troop came marching— Marching—marching— King George’s men came marching, up to the old inn-door.
4 To warm the Highwayman of the danger, Bess shoots herself to save his life.
5 The next day, when the Highwayman hears Bess killed herself, he goes back for revenge. But the Red Coats kill him first.
6 Although both Bess and the Highwayman are dead, they are forever in love and always will be.
Her musket shattered the moonlight, shattered her breast in the moonlight and warned him-with her death
