Delegates from five states met up to try and promote trade between all of them. They believed that the high taxes on goods from other states was too much and wanted national trade but to do this they needed to amend the Articles of Confederation.
shhhhhhhhhhhh don't tell anyone.
55 delegates were at the constitutional convention three-fourths of them had been representatives in the Continental Congress. The convention did not reflect the diverse U.S. population: the nations leaders did not think about these groups as citizens.
BUT WHAT ABOUT US!!!!!!
Some delegates thought they were only drafting amendments others thought they would be designing a new government. They realised that the government was useful to keep order but not control the people.
They elected George Washington as president for the election. They didn't want to be influenced by the politics of the day so everything was super secret and extra protected.
Edmund Randolph spoke first and he suggested 'The Virginia Plan'. Three branches and one of those branches was Legislature. It had two houses and was based on state population. Smaller States were worried about bigger states would rule everything.
William Patterson came up with an alternative. The New Jersey Plan, 1 house, each state has 1 vote, and equal reps.
