The creature leaves the university after his creator abandoned him. He walks around for a while eventually stumbling into the woods. He comes here looking for food, he eventually becomes cold. Being that the creature feels he is not loved he feels it would just be better to leave.
I must leave for my creator does not love me.
While walking in the woods, the creature comes across a fire that some travelers left behind. He burns his hand while studying it. He eventually learned he needed dry wood to fuel the fire. The creature is learning the necessities of survival, yet still has no social skills. He is practically a newborn.
The creature stumbles into town, as soon as the people saw him they either ran in horror or attempted to kill him. He got away from the town to keep them from harming him. The creature now knows the evil of man kind, being that this is the only interactions between him and humans he thinks they are all this way.
KILL that hideous monster!!!
He retreats to a small house where he would live for a while. In this house he would watch a family, this became a great interest of his because of how they interacted. He grew an affection for said family and attempted to learn their language. He also catches sight of his face and it upsets him. The creature is now understanding the reality of the situation he is in, he realizes that he is hideous, he had no view of his face or body before, he had no reference. He now understands why people ran from him and attempted to kill him.
I do indeed like this family!
"This trait of kindness moved me sensibly. I had been accustomed, during the night, to steal a part of their store for my own consumption, but when I found that in doing this I inflicted pain on the cottages, I abstained and satisfied myself with berries, nuts, and roots which I gathered from a neighboring wood" (Shelley 109)
He soon learned that he was taking the food away from the people during a harsh winter. He sets out to get them firewood and rather than taking their food he gathered it in the forest. Many of the townsfolk were happy for this deed. Through this interaction he shows that he understands how to love or care for another, however he has still not seen one care for him.
He creates his own shelter and waits out the winter in this place. He continues to watch his beloved family and fantasizes of said family accepting him. He is unhappy that many of the townsfolk are upset due to poor conditions. The creature continues to show care for this family even though they have done nothing for him, it is very important to him that they are well. He would rather live out without a definite source of food than take away from the comfort of the people in the town.
