Jonas lives in his community He likes his life just the way it is there are no winners or losers everyone has a role in the community (which has lots of rules) he is almost 12 when he turns 12 he will be assigned his role in the community.
Jonas is selected to be the receiver of memory at the ceremony of 12 the most important job in the community he is honored but nervous because the job involves physical pain and goes against some of the rules he's used to.
Jonas receives training from the Giver who has to give him the memories of the whole world to Jonas the good ones and the bad ones he learns about sledding, Christmas, sunshine, war, color, wildlife, excruciating pain, poverty, hunger, picnics, boat rides, and much more.
