Storyboard Text

  • Farmers usually use fertilizer, containing nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, to help the growth of their crops.
  • When rain comes, the nutrients percolates through the soil and causes runoff.
  • The nutrients, that are now in lakes, cause rapid growth in algae, plants, and phytoplankton. These algae blooms black sunlight underneath them and keep plants from using photosynthesis.
  • When all the nutrients are used up, the algae, phytoplankton, and plants die and sink to the bottom where bacteria use oxygen for the process of decomposition.
  • When all the oxygen is being used, it makes the water anoxic. This means there isn't any dissolved oxygen in the water.
  • With no oxygen, the fish and other animals suffocate. This leads to more decompostion and feeds the cycle of low oxygen concentration.
