In the exposition of Chapter 1, we learn that Brent has recently moved to Chicago and is attending a private school. Brent is getting to go to a party, and this is his chance to make friends and fit into his school. Brent is very nervous about attending, for he hopes to familiarize himself with the "in crowd"and obtain a girlfriend.
Brent's conflict in this chapter is that he never fits into any situation, and his school is no different. Brent desperately wants to have friends, and he has none.
The rising action in this story is when Brent is humiliated at the party. He drinks too much alcohol, and is then publicly rejected by the girl he wants to date, and everyone sees and laughs. Brent is very angry, and punches the host after he makes of him. Brent storms out of the party.
