Exposition: The main character, Thomas, arrives at the Glades where he is welcomed by many other boys. He is frightened and confused about who he is, where he is, and why he is there. The others (Alby, Newt, Minho, and Chuck) help him to get accustomed to living in the Glades and informs him of the maze surrounding the Glades.
Inciting Incident: Thomas learns that no one has been able to find an exit to the maze, so he is determined to find one. One day, Alby and Minho do not come back in time before the gate closes, so Thomas jumps into the maze to save his friends. No one had been able to survive a night the maze before.
Rising Action: Thomas and Minho are chased by Grievers, but luckily they survive the night. Thomas is now designated as a Runner, so he and Minho search and explore the maze each day in hopes of finding a way out. There is also a girl named Teresa who arrives, which is a very strange occurrence and makes everything in the Glades change.
Conflict: One night, the sky turns dark and the walls don't close like usual. This allows the Grievers to come into the Glade and attack the Gladers.
Falling Action: Thomas sacrifices himself by purposely getting stung by a Griever which helps him remember that he and Teresa had helped the Creators in their past lives. He comes up with a plan to escape the maze. They go through the griever hole because there is a code that they can use to shut down the Grievers and open up an exit.
Resolution: They finally got out of the maze and they enter a huge chamber where the Creators are. Gally, who had gotten stung by a Griever, tries to kill Thomas but Chuck jumps in front and gets stabbed instead. As a friend that was like a brother to him, Thomas is devastated to see Chuck's death. The Gladers get rescued and are told why there were chosen to be put in the maze.
