I'm just a poor peasant! I'll never get to move up my social class and live in a castle!
Unlike some other kings, I work hard to protect my kingdom! I have to make sure I show people whose in charge.
What are they talking about? I was reading and sewing throughout all of last night!
The party was so great last night!
While you were partying, I was busy being a judge and making punishments!
Feudalism is the system in which people worked for a lord in order to get protection. There was a social pyramid where monarchs, or kings and queens, where at the top, lords/ladies were second, knights were third, and serfs, a type of peasant, was last at the bottom.
Dearest new squire, you will learn how to fight with a sword!
The monarchs are in charge of keeping order and providing protection. Their daily life consisted of not having enough money most of the time, so they had to hire lords/ladies to provide protection and help manage the land in exchange for land.
As a serf, I can't leave the lord's land! I am stuck farming and working here forever!
Lords/Ladies were the managers of their section of land. They also gave out fiefs to knights for protection, acted as judges and punishers, and oversaw taxes and farming, all as part of their job. However, their daily life was a lot less working and a lot more partying, for they would hunt, hawk, play board games, and overall party and feast. They ate the best foods and oversaw all household workers.
A knight's job was to do the actual protection of the kingdom and fighting off of the invaders. In their daily life, they trained to be a powerful warrior. When training, they start out as a page, or a servant, then become squires who train under a knight, and finally they become knighted. They were very wealthy and even jousted for fun and exercise.
Wow, really?! I've only ever been taught how to play music when I was still a page.
Serfs, types of peasants, usually farmed, grinded grains, and cared for livestock as part of their job, and sometimes were skilled workers, like metalworkers, carpenters, etc. Their life revolved around work. They also payed heavy taxes, lived in one room houses with animals and no furniture, and ate "low class" and spoiled foods.
My family is becoming sick of the spoiled food we eat constantly! On top of that, we are struggling to pay these heavy taxes that we use our crops to pay for, and we don't even get to keep half of it!
