As Hal, Charles, and Mercedes pack their sled, bystanders notice the mountain of unneeded supplies on their sled.
Despite the advice nice men gave them, they didn't listen until they started throwing their belongings in the street and on the sidewalk, causing Mercedes to start crying.
After getting the most essential items in the sled, they got the dogs to pull the sled, and eventually got to John Thornton's camp.
By this time, the dogs were beyond exhausted, but yet Charles still whipped Buck to get up and continue the trail. John Thronton stopped the abuse by punching Charles to save Buck from any further injuries.
While Hal and Charles were recovering from the fight, the chunk of ice the sled and them were on gave away, with the three, the dogs, and the sled fell into the water, with Buck and John Thornton the only ones left on the ground. John proceeded to check Buck for broken bones, but found none.
As Buck recovered, he saw that John Thornton can survive well in Alaska, while Mercedes, Hal, and Charles coudn't. When Buck was fully healthy, he never strayed to far from John Thornton, and showed him much affection.
