  • What: Hamlet stabs Polonius
  • What wilt thou do? Thou wilt not murder me? Help, help, ho!
  • How now, a rat? Dead for a ducat, dead!
  • Act 3, scene 4
  • Oh, I am slain!
  • Why: Mistaking the intruder for Claudius, Hamlet stabs what he assumes to be a spy (rat)
  • What, ho? Help, help, help!
  • What: Hamlet has the chance to kill Claudius, but stops
  • To take him in the purging of his soul when he is fit and seasoned for his passage? No. Up, sword, and know thou a more horrid hent.
  • Act 3, scene 3
  • Why: Hamlet moves in to kill Claudius, but seeing that he's praying, realizes that to kill him now would grant him full passage to heaven
  • O good Horatio, I'll take the ghost's word for a thousand pounds. Didst perceive?
  • What: Hamlet sets up and executes a play depicting his father's murder
  • Upon the talk of the poisoning?
  • I did very well note him.
  • Very well, my lord.

  • Why: Hamlet wants to see what Claudius's reaction to the poisoning scene is
