In 1506, at the age of 16, Ignatius of Loyola was sent to serve as a page to Juan Velazquez, the treasurer of the kingdom of Castile. In 1517 Ignatius of Loyola became a knight in the service of another relative, Antonio Manrique de Lara, duke of Nájera and viceroy of Navarre. Antonio employed Ignatius in the military to send him on diplomatic missions around the world.
Pamplona May 21st 1521. Ignatius leading the effort in battle gets struck by a cannon ball that opens his left calf and shatters his right shin. The Spanish troops lose their spirit and surrender. After the recovery he traveled to Monserrat by horse where confesses his sins for three days, leaves his sword at the black Madonna and trades in his fancy clothes. At college Ignatius he meets Francis Xavier and Peter Fabour.
After completing his studies at university. Ignatius and a hand full of buddies set up in Rome. since the holy land was of limits they decided the best way to serve was to form a community by the pope. On 27th September 1540 pope the third gave approval to thebrand new society of Jesus. There was a lot of work to be done and with only 10 members the jesuits knew they would need greater numbers that impatcs the world.
