Radiation Shields created from metal laminates were developed to better protect sensitive spacecraft electronics. This material is lightweight and moldable and has a variety of applications such as clothing, satellites, or piping.
benefits: flexible, moldable, and can be made for custom hard-to-shield locations. its more lightweight than traditional radiation shielding for electronics and X-rays. the shields can also be integrated into resins to provide easy adhesion
NASA Langley Research Center has developed a shapeable radiation shield made from fiber metal laminates. The technology was developed based on the need for better performing shielding of sensitive spacecraft electronics.
