  • The spread of communism 
  • Under Soviet rule
  • Tensions with Armenians
  • It created the Tajik Soviet Republic. Also, the states of central Asia were made communist by the Soviet Union.
  • Central Asia became a zone of conflict
  • Under Soviet rule, Tajikistan experienced economical and social progress. Plus, living standards in the Republic were still among the lowest in the union. Most lived in rural qishlaqs. 
  • Tajikistan declared its sovereignty
  • Tensions with Armenians squared off in the republic capital, Dushanbe. 26 people died and 565 people were injured. Also, the soviet troops put down the riots.
  • Violent clashes erupted between ethnic groups in the region's valley. Plus, in 1992-97, Civil War in Tajikistan became entangled in war with Afghanistan. 
  • Tajikistan declared its sovereignty over Soviet laws. They also participated in a referendum in March as part of the attempt to preserve the union. Tajik SSR was renamed Republic of Tajikistan. Then, Tajik seceded from the Soviet Union. So, conflicts after independence caused a Civil War throughout the country over the next six years.
