  • The King and Queen are fearful of Hamlet's supposed insanity and send old friends to check up on Hamlet.
  • "Gather / so much from occasion as you may Glean" (II.ii.15-16)
  • "On such regards of safety and allowance / As therein are set down" (II.ii.84-85)
  • The Ambassadors give a paper to the King from the King of Norway .
  • Polonius reads a letter supposedly from Hamlet to Ophelia and uses it to portray him being crazy for her.
  • "Your noble son is mad" (II.ii.99)
  • Polonius talks with Hamlet about Ophelia and Hamlet's responses make Polonius think he is even more mad, while Hamlet is distressed.
  • "These tedious old fools" (II.ii.237)
  • Hamlet and his old friends meet, but Hamlet rightly suspects they were sent by the King and Queen. 
  • "I know the good king and queen have sent for / you" (II.ii.303-304)
