After his serving of detention he was briefly brought to the Tanzanian border and was abandoned there.
Luckily for Ahmad the UNHCR picked him up and brought him to Tanzania, where he would stay.
When Ahmad's first application for refugee status was denied in Tanzania, he tried to get asylum access to return to Malawi. This only made his situation worse complicating it with many authorities. All throughout this process Ahmad was living off of the UNHCR's supplies and shelter. After two years, Tanzania approved the continued assistance for Ahmad. Finally Ahmad gained refugee status after 6 years of travels through 4 countries. Ahmad is still waiting to be reunited with his family but he is in safe hands.
