  • Articles of Confederation By: Ally Hoogs
  • In the colonies, the government could ask the states for money (tax), but not force them to, so colonies gave none. This created more debt for the nation
  • Ha! We don't have to pay any taxes!
  • totally, but isn't that bad? we won't have money to survive as a nation
  • Congress also didn't have the power to collect state debts owed to the government, adding to the debt and giving them no money to operate
  • We have barely any money! Other countries laugh at us and we are close to collapse!
  • On top of that, we have no money to help our armies and disputes! We can't afford anything
  • Debt
  • Congress tried to pay back this $40,000 debt by issuing paper money. But these continental dollars were not backed by gold or silver, so their value was inflated
  • Our whole economy is completely falling apart!
  • Well our money has been inflated and it is worth very little!
  • Inflation led to debt for colonists. Hostility started to grow between debtors and creditors as a result.
  • How come we have to lose our farms because of inflation! Not fair!
  • Well too bad! I need my money back and that's the law
  • Because of this, other nations didn't trust the United States nd didn't trade with them as a result
  • We can't do business with your declining economy and 13 separate colonies
