  • The Mayans had times where they had droughts and lots of water.
  • Disaster or Environmental Change
  • Rulers were also believed to speak to the gods so when the connections failed to produce rainfall and good harvesting tensions developed.
  • The Mayans went to war for water, land, and other resources 
  • Warfare was probably caused by environmental disaster because they probably wanted land that they lost.

  • The Mayans would use the splash-and-burn technique so ashes can be nutrients for future crops.
  • Warfare probably caused famine because they participated in war
  • Disease
  • The Peregrinus maidis  spread a disease to the most important crop called maize.
  • The Howler Monkey had a disease that was transmitted to mosquitoes and other hosts.
  • This theory was probably caused by famine because the splash-and-burn agriculture might have caused diseases and also caused crop failure.
