Storyboard Text

  • Policy analysts have expressed concerns about the military buildup, referring to events of the previous decade in which the demands of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as growing disillusion with the military operations, resulted in a shortfall of recruits and changes to eligibility standards. Some recruiters were also found to have used unethical tactics, such as lying to recruits, threatening applicants with arrest, and advising recruits to forge documents.(M.R)
  • Introduction
  • Narration
  • the military’s willingness to lower its educational and aptitude standards causes concern that an all-volunteer force may not provide the best possible security. The targeting of economically disadvantaged communities bolsters the arguments of anti-war activists who contend that it is unjust for the poor to fight wars for the rich. And although recruiters are bound by a code to maintain specific ethical standards, detractors have criticized the military for aggressively targeting low-income communities, minorities, and minors.( Military Recruitment)
  • Military recruitment refers to the activity of attracting people to, and selecting them for, military training and employment (Military Recruitment)
  • Confirmation Novel
  • Military recruitment caused Ender to grow up too fast It caused Ender to grow up without love and certain aspects every child needs. It convinced Ender to be someone he was not
  • To continue our army growth we must regulate policies that will restrict certain parts of the recruitment which is unjustifiable.
  • Confirmation research
  • "Other examples of school-based recruiting efforts challenge widely held beliefs about equality of opportunity. If we are serious about promoting higher education to all students, why do some youths see far more khaki and camouflage than college brochures?" (Hank)
  • Recruiting, developing, and retaining intellectual capital within the military is a national security issue. The world is complex, and the military will need smart, educated leaders who can assist policymakers in navigating such an environment. Unfortunately, some research strongly suggests that the military has barriers to both recruiting the intellectual capital that it needs and rewarding that which it does have. Studying the problem—and owning up to it if it truly exists—would be a necessary first step.(Hank)
  • Concession/Refutation
  • Although recruiters are bound by a code to maintain specific ethical standards.(Kershner)
  • The number of growing malpractice recruiters is affecting the overall average of security of the U.S.A and it should be terminated before any more harm can be done to society no excuses or exceptions should be made. "Persuade him that he wants to come with us more than he wants to stay" (Orson, 12) "We don't always do it that way" (Orson, 15)
  • Conclusion
  • Given the way military recruiters rely on unfettered access to public schools and students, it would be unreasonable to expect them to voluntarily scale back their activities. But educators, parents, and activists have an important role to play in pushing for reform. And to ensure these rules are followed, a designated military monitor should be present at all times.(Hank)
  • "officers with one-standard-deviation higher cognitive abilities had 29 percent, 18 percent, and 32 percent lower odds, respectively, of being selected early to major, early to lieutenant colonel, and for battalion command than their one-standard deviation lower cognitive-ability peers. "(Hank)
  • "Efforts to regulate the presence of recruiters invariably produce strong opposition. The military and veterans’ groups claim that such sensible reforms are “anti-military” and undermine the ability to recruit new service members. But advocates, parents, and teachers who wish to protect students should not be intimidated."(Hank)
  • The military often tailors its methods when recruiting from different communities, including launching advertising campaigns that appeal to different demographics. These targeted campaigns rely on market research to maximize their impact.(Kershner)
  • Incentives to enlist, including signing bonuses and skills training, are used in conjunction with appeals to a recruit’s sense of patriotism.(Kershner)
  • The military and veterans’ groups claim that such sensible reforms are “anti-military” and undermine the ability to recruit new service members. But advocates, parents, and teachers who wish to protect students should not be intimidated. This is not about being for, or against, the military. It is ensurity.(Kershner)
