Maureen and Debbie have been best friends for a while. But everything changed when Glenna came around. Instead of being just best friends with both girls, Debbie has to share Maureen with Glenna. In this scene Maureen and Glenna are having fun at a carnival, but they are leaving Debbie out.
Debbie was trying to have a good time but it was hard. all of the rides were two-seaters so while two was having fun, one was standing alone. Debbie was trying to get attention from Maureen by offering her french fries, and asking her to go on the Zipper.
Debbie then went home and her dad was on the drive way. Her dad asked how was the carnival and she said "okay" and flashed a fake smile. Debbie started to think about how Maureen was her best friend, but then she wondered "was she?" she didn't know.
Glenna, Debbie, and Maureen were all in the car with Glenna's mom. Glenna asked her mom what day they would be going on vacation. Debbie was jumping with excitement on the inside, finally a week without Glenna, but shortly her happiness stopped. Maureen was going with her! Debbie tried to hold it in, but she couldn't. She was so upset, so she got out of the car and walked off.
When Debbie got out of the car, she was surprised to see Maureen get out behind her, but Debbie kept on walking. Maureen asked if she was mad, and Debbie said "Not mad, I just miss when we were friends". Maureen said that they were still friends. They started walking down to the river.
When they got down to the river and sat on a branch, and it crossed Debbie's mind that to anyone who happened to see them there, we would look the same as we always had. Debbie and Maureen. There they are “Frick and Frack,” her dad said. They would look the same. Did that mean something? While they were talking, Maureen said that Debbie should give Glenna a chance. She said that Glenna would be happy if she disappeared. Later the two girls had lots of fun with each other at the river, just like they used to.
