First, electrons are moved in the electron transport chains within the thylakoid membrane. Every 12 of the three-carbon molecules made, two of them are removed to build organic compounds and 10 continue on in the chain. The removed molecules bond together forming six-carbon sugar like glucose. Photosynthesis removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and releases oxygen gas.
The light-dependent reac-tions require light and water, occur in the thylakoids, and produce ATP and NADPH. The light-independent reactions require carbon dioxide, occur in the stroma, and produce high-energy sugars.

The Acetyl CoA is then oxidized in the citric acid cycle to sort two molecules of CO2 per cycle.
