Prtolomeli Dias his crew reached the southern tip of Africa, a big storm came up and hit the fleet for days so Dias and his Crew explored Africa and Dias considered to sailing to India but the Crew was exhausted and food supplies were low and went back home.
10 years later Vasco De Gama began exploring the east African coast. In 1498, de Gama reached the port of Calicut on the southwestern coast of India. And found spices, rare silks, and precious gems that filled Calicut's shops. They loaded their ships and returned home.
The Spanish also wanted a direct sea route to Asia. In 1492, Christopher Columbus convinced Spain to finance a plan: finding a sea route to Asia by Sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. but reached the Caribbean. He thought that they had landed at the East Indies.
Pope Alexander Vl stepped in in 1493 to keep peace between the two Countries.
An imaginary dividing line, drawn north to south, through the Atlantic. All lands to the west was Spain this included most of the Americas All lands to the East was Portugal. Portugal felt that Spain was given too much land.
So the line was moved farther West to include parts of modern-day Brazil for the Portuguese. In 1494 Spain and Portugal sign the Treaty of Tordesillas.
