British troops, led by Burgoyne, arrived at Saratoga Springs and were surrounded by the militia; they surrendered October 17, 1777. This battle encouraged the french to join the battle against the British.
Lasting from 1777-78, George Washington and his troops settled in Valley Forge, building log cabins and hunting food. 2,500 men died from disease and exposure.
