When king Saul was chosen king, they won many battles. It protected the village. Every battle they won, Saul got more fame. But he lost the support of his people. According to the Hebrew Bible, Saul disobeyed some of Gods orders. God commanded Samuel to choose another King.
Samuel chose a young shepherd named David. Even before David became king, he won praise for his bravery. Once he challenged the Goliath, he had a slingshot, shot a stone on the Goliath forehead and he dropped dead. As he got control under Saul's army, he won many battles, and the women of Israel sang his praises "Saul has slain his thousands, but David has slain his ten thousands." Then Saul became jealous and tried to kill him. But, David escaped, and Saul was killed instead by the Philistines. When he came back he still was king. David defeated the Philistines. Then he built their capital in the hill country away from the coast. He was the villages best king.
After King David died, his son, Solomon took his place. through trade and treaties with other peoples, Solomon brought peace to the religion. He constructed many cities and, according to the Hebrew Bible, he built the first temple in Jerusalem, made of cedarwood and costly stone. His temple held the Ark of the Covenant and other sacred objects. But despite his accomplishments, many people turned against him because they did not like working for his building projects and the taxes were too high. After Solomon died, the people had entered a troubled period in their history. Deep disagreements split their kingdom. Also to make it worse, powerful neighbors treated their survival. Then the Ten Northern tribes rebelled against them. Then the Assyrians and Caleadeans came and took over the kingdom. But, they still practiced their religion even after they were captured.
