The setting of the book takes place in Bronx, New York, near the Yankee Stadium. It was in the early 2000's. You also see alleyways and the apartment building Michael lives in. There are shops and other stores nearby.Much of the story also takes place on the baseball field.

Michael is noticed by the other teams coaches because he is very good. They question if he is really 12 years old and ask for his birth certificate. Michael does not have his birth certificate because his parents have both died and it is in Cuba. He is no longer allowed to play.
This book is all about baseball and how Michael's life revolves around baseball. It teaches you to never let yourself give up on dreams even when bad things happen.
The main characters include, Michael, Carlos, Mrs.Cora, and Manny. Michael Arroyo is the main character and known as the best pitcher on his team. Carlos is Michael's brother, he takes care of Michael and works many jobs. Mrs.Cora is like a grandmother to the boys. She watches over them. Manny is Michael's best friend. He plays catcher position for the Clippers team. Some other characters are Ellie, El Grande, Uncle Timo and Mr. Gibbs.

Michael has been hiding the fact that his parents are not living and that he has been living with his 17 year old brother Carlos. He is not able to produce his birth certificate because it is in Cuba. He is confronted by the league commissioner and told he can not play. Michael is crushed because he loves baseball so much.
El Grande goes to Cuba to get a copy of the birth certificate. He and Ellie give it to Michael in the last inning of the championship game. Michael plays and strikes out the last three batters. The boys celebrate that they will be able to play in Yankee Stadium.
I liked this book, it was interesting. It is a good book for someone my age to read. It is especially good for sports lovers. It is easy to understand and has valuable lessons. I have learned that you should never give up on your dreams and it is good to have support of friends and family.
