A long time ago, all the Haudenosaunee tribes were at war with each other. A peacemaker wanted to spread peace and unity throughout all the tribes. He came to the house of an Onondaga leader named Hayo'wetha, who also wanted peace throughout the tribes. They started working together to accomplish this goal, but they had an obstacle, Tadahado, an evil leader who hated the idea of peace.
The Peacemaker showed his goal of peace and unity by using arrows. He indicated that the arrow is the tribe and broke it. Then, he tied 5 arrows together and showed to all the other tribes that it wouldn't break. What he meant was that the five tribes, if they worked together, could be a very powerful nation by supporting one another. All the tribes compromised to this message of peace and everyone was happy, except Tadodaho.
The Peacemaker and Hayo'wetha confronted Tadodaho, promising that if he accepts peace, Onondaga would be the capital of the grand council. Tadodaho succumbed to their arguments and agreed, accepting the Great Law of Peace. Now all joined together properly, the five nations became known as the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.
