  • "[Simon] knew that one of his times was coming on. The Lord of the Flies was expanding like a balloon" (143).
  • Don't make me angry! I'm the beast, and the boys are going to have fun on this island.
  • "[Simon] crawled through the creepers till he was in the dusk of the forest. He walked drearily between the trunks, his face empty of expression" (146).
  • "[Simon] saw how pitilessly the layers of rubber and canvas held together the poor body... the beast was harmless and horrible; and the news must reach the others as soon as possible" (146, 147).
  • I have to untangle this poor thing!
  • "The circle became a horseshoe. A thing was crawling out of the forest. It came darkly, uncertainly... the beast stumbled into the horseshoe" (152).
  • Kill the beast, cut its throat, spill its blood!
  • It's him! The beast!
  • Kill it! Kill that beast!
  • "The beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face. It was crying out against the abominable noise, something about a body on the hill" (152).
  • Stop! Stop! The beast is on the hill!

  • "'That was Simon... that was murder [Ralph]'...'It was an accident,' Piggy said suddenly... 'I'm frightened. Of us'" (156, 157).
  • Who was I last night? I can't believe this, I'm a murderer! No, no, this was an accident.
  • Piggy! What have we done! We killed poor Simon! We thought he was the beast!
