"[Simon] knew that one of his times was coming on. The Lord of the Flies was expanding like a balloon" (143).
Don't make me angry! I'm the beast, and the boys are going to have fun on this island.
"[Simon] crawled through the creepers till he was in the dusk of the forest. He walked drearily between the trunks, his face empty of expression" (146).
"[Simon] saw how pitilessly the layers of rubber and canvas held together the poor body... the beast was harmless and horrible; and the news must reach the others as soon as possible" (146, 147).
I have to untangle this poor thing!
"The circle became a horseshoe. A thing was crawling out of the forest. It came darkly, uncertainly... the beast stumbled into the horseshoe" (152).
Kill the beast, cut its throat, spill its blood!
It's him! The beast!
Kill it! Kill that beast!
"The beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face. It was crying out against the abominable noise, something about a body on the hill" (152).
Stop! Stop! The beast is on the hill!
Kill, kill, kill!
"'That was Simon... that was murder [Ralph]'...'It was an accident,' Piggy said suddenly... 'I'm frightened. Of us'" (156, 157).
Who was I last night? I can't believe this, I'm a murderer! No, no, this was an accident.
Piggy! What have we done! We killed poor Simon! We thought he was the beast!
