Buddha was born Siddhartha Gautama in a kingdom which is now Nepal. His fortune teller told his father that Sidd will either become a religous leader or great king, but his father insured that his son would become the country's next ruler.
How dare you?
I don't think this is the path for me...
Sidd was protected from everything unpleasent by his father. Whenever he would decide to ride into town, guards would gallop ahead of him to assure no sick or old people were in sight.
One day, no one was supervising the prince as he was riding into the village. To his horror, he saw an old man leaning on a stick, a sick man dying, a dead man surrounded by his devestated family, and a holy homeless man walking by himself. He became fearful, disgusted and scared.
Not long after this, Sidd left home to find answers leaving everything behind. First, he lived with the ascetics and practiced send denial. This did not help him, so he abandoned them after being malnourished and unhealthy.
Sidd then meditated under a fig tree for 49 days to reach a state called enlightenment. Legend has it that Mara, the god of death and seize, tried to tempt Sidd with wealth and other wonderful things. Because he refused, he became Buddha. Now everything was known to him, and he lived in a state of peace and joy.
Buddha eventually came back home and travelled around the world with his family to teach everyone what he had learned. He gained many followers along the way, and tried to spread his great knowledge until his unfortunate death.
