Storyboard Text
- Rome was from Italy and controlled most of Italy. It was a major world power and it had an incredibly powerful army. It was fighting with Carthage for the island, Sicily.
- Carthage was a colony from the Phonecian Empire. It was located in Africa, but controlled a lot of land in other places. It was a major world power at the time, with an exceptionally strong navy.
- The First Punic War was mostly a water battle. Carthage had an advantage because they were better sailors than Rome. However, Rome used gangplanks to board Carthage’s ships. As Rome was superior on land, Carthage was defeated.
- Hannibal crossed the Alps on elephants to attack Rome’s outskirts. Rome tired Carthage, and Carthage retreatd after it got to Rome’s outskirts. While Hannibal attacked Rome, a portion of Rome’s army went to Carthage and virtually destroyed it.
- Although Carthage was basically wiped out after the 2nd Punic War, Cato the Elder, of Rome, pushed to have a 3rd war. He succeeded, and Carthage was burned. The Romans took all the valuables and sold the entire populace into slavery. Finnally they put salt in the surrounding area so nothing could grow again.
- The effect of the Punic Wars were that Rome gained more territories. Much farmland was destroyed, and many farmers had been fighting instead of farming. Rome now controled,modern day Italy, parts of Africa, and parts ofmodern day Spain.
