- Young Malcolm X is heading to Boston, away from Lansing, Michigan for a new life with more opportunity. His siblings are saying goodbye.
- Malcolm meets an old coal miner, who he has conversation with, shakes hands, and befriends.
- Boston. My sister lives there.
- Where you headed, Malcolm Little?
- Ain't anyone ever tell you the road is a dangerous place for a lone little ******?
- Please don't say "son".
- Hey, now, if you're traveling together, you sit together, *******
- The bus driver comes and rudely tells Malcolm that it is dangerous for him to be alone. The old coal miner lies and says Malcolm is his nephew, so the bus driver tells them to sit with each other.
- He's with me. He's my... nephew.
- Surely was . . . Until they strung him up. Avert your eyes, son.
- Malcolm and the coal miner are have a nice ride until they see a black man who has been lynched, hanging in the woods.
- Is that . . . a person?
- The coal miner "gets off at his stop somewhere in Pennsylvania".
- "The bus pulls out, and I'm alone again. My family is far behind me now. I don't know what's ahead."
- "The city is alive. More than alive - it's hopping, thriving, breathing. Never have I seen so many people at one time."
- Malcolm arrives at Boston where he is greeted by his half-sister, Ella. He will be staying with Ella in Boston.
