  • Selena Sardothien is the main protagonist of the story. She's an 18-year-old former assassin trying to clear her name and gain freedom. She is a very independent and determined character.
  • Imagery: “We all bear scars,... Mine just happen to be more visible than most.”
  • Cain is the main antagonist of the story. The book never reveals much about Cain exept that he's big, strong, and unstoppable. He is favored to win the contest when it first starts.
  • Suspense: "There was a thing waiting in the darkness, and he could not bring himself to fight it for much longer"
  • The theme of Throne of Glass is to have the desire to achieve success while overcoming obstacles. Selena has to win the contest in order to gain her freedom.
  • Symbolism: The three main characters Selena, Dorian, and Chaol all love books, the kings library contains thousands of them
  • Selena, being a former assassin has lots of scars and bruises from her past life from all the fights she's gotten into.
  • The prince knows that his father the king is corrupt he just doesn't want to belive it, so he tries to figure out what his father is up to, and hopefully find out that his father isn't corrupt as he thinks.
  • The kings library contains all kinds of books, some of which are about magic which is supposed to be outlawed but Selena uses these books to her advantage.
