  • President Washington creates a foreign policy
  • The XYZ Affair 
  • Piracy
  • While Great Britain and France were at war, George Washington announced a policy of neutrality. Which meant that the US wouldn't  aid France or Great Britain, this led to isolationism. For the next 100 years, the US did not have any permanent alliances. 
  • The Battle Of New Orleans
  • President Adams sent 3 representatives to France to ask them to end the attacks. France refused to speak to the Americans. 3 secret agents, X, Y, and Z met them instead. They demanded a large sum of money, but the Americans refused. This event became known as the XYZ affair. 
  • The Jay Treaty
  • X     Y      Z
  • Pirates from North Africa were threatening American ships. For years, American ships and their crews were being robbed in the Mediterranean and held for ransom. By the time Jefferson became president, Adams and Washington has already paid 2 million to get back all of the hostages. 
  • New Latin American Nations 
  • Support Latin American with us! - Great Britian
  • After a loss for the British, their new target was New Orleans. Defended by an army of 7,000 and General Andrew Jackson, British troops were met with deadly fire. 2,000 British troops were killed or wounded. This battle was of the greatest American Victories in the war of 1812
  • President Washington sent chief justice of the supreme court, John Jay to London to settle things with the British. In 1794, a treaty known as the Jay Treaty was signed. The British agreed to take their troops out of the Ohio Valley. 
  • Thanks for signing this treaty and taking your soldiers out of the Ohio Valley
  • The British and Americans were excited by the Latin American independence movements because trade was now open again with foreign countries. Other European countries were not happy about it. President Monroe was unsure if he should do something to support the new Latin American countries.
