Storyboard Text

  • Miranda v Arizona
  • Police arrested and detained Ernesto Miranda when he was 15 years old.
  • Miranda was convicted of kidnapping and rape and sentenced to jail for 20 years.
  • Miranda confessed to these crimes without knowledge of his constitutional rights against self-incrimination and his right to an attorney.
  • The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that Miranda's confession was not admissible in court due to the violation of his personal rights.
  • The judges who opposed this ruling were of the opinion that Miranda's confession had nothing to do with the violation of his rights, and therefore should still be admissible in court.
  • Miranda was released.
