  • We must travel to the Land of the Dead to find Tiresias!
  • Accept this sacrifice and our prayers Hades; allow us to speak with the dead.
  • You must not harm the cattle of Helios or your journey will end in tragedy.
  • Circe sends Odysseus and his men to the Land of the Dead to find the prophet Tiresias. He will tell them what they must do to return home to Ithaca. Circe sent them sailing on a fair wind until they reached their destination where they beached their ship.
  • Mother I am so sorry for leaving you!
  • Odysseus has to make an offering to the gods in order to speak with the dead. The ghosts of the past arrive to tell Odysseus the stories of their death and where they hail from.
  • Tell me of your lives and how you died.
  • Off we go back to Circe's island.
  • Tiresias informs Odysseus that they will come upon a flock of sheep and cattle on the Thrinacian island, that belongs to Helios, god of the sun. Tiresias advises him not to harm the cattle; killing the cattle will bring about the destruction of his men and ship and he will return home to find hostile suitors in his house. He also suggests that Odysseus and his men give up offerings to Poseidon to avoid incurring his wrath any further.
  • That was really scary!
  • Odysseus sees his mother, who was still alive when he left for Troy, in the Land of the Dead.  Anticleia assures Odysseus that Penelope has stayed loyal to him for the years he has been absent. She said the cause of her death was a broken heart because she believed him dead after not returning from Troy. He starts crying and tries to embrace her, but she does not have a physical form.
  • A crowd of the dead gathered to converse with Odysseus and tell him the stories of their lives and deaths. Among them were many famous Greek heroes including Agamemnon and Achilles. He spoke with hundreds of people and to tell the story of them all would take all day and night.
  • Odysseus and his men left the Land of the Dead after being surrounded by thousands of ghosts wishing to tell their story. They rushed back to the ship out of fear that Proserpine would send a Gorgon upon them. After completing their task, hearing out the prophet Tiresias, they had no reason to linger and swiftly sailed back to Circe's island.
