  • Welcome Phillip, as you can see Jacob is doing the morning exercise on the board. Please take your seat and do the same.
  • Hey man! What's up? Did you see the game last night?
  • Phillip, please take your seat and begin the morning exercise.
  • Jesse man, I'm just talking to my friend. Leave me alone, will ya?
  • Antecedent: Phillip arrives to school late and full of energy from a sugary breakfast. He enters the classroom whistling & singing loudly.
  • I understand you want to talk to your friends, but it is time to work now. If we finish early we will have some free time at the end of class. Are you ready to join us so we can all enjoy that free time together? If not, you may wait in the hallway until you are ready and make-up the class work as homework.
  • Hmm
  • Behavior: Phillip enters the room and goes straight to his friend Jacob who has already begun the morning exercise. Mr. B invites Phillip to do the same but Phillip ignores him and continues trying to converse with friends.
  • Great, I'm happy that you will be joining us today. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on today's lesson.
  • Okay, I would prefer to do the work now.
  • Behavior: Mr. B repeats his request and Phillip reacts with sarcasm, then continues trying to converse with Jacob.
  • Consequence: Mr. B requests to speak with Phillip in the hallway privately and gives him a choice. 
  • Consequence: Phillip decides to rejoin the class rather than have extra homework at the end of the day. Mr. B praises his decision and they enter the classroom together.
