Japanese Invasion, 1937
The Nationalists and Communists capture Beijing in 1928 and end warlord rule, therefore unifying China. Nationalist leader Chiang Kai Shek begins a purge of Communists, emerging Mao Zedong as leader of the Communists.

Japan's invasion of China brought a halt to China's Civil War. Both sides agreed it was better to collectively resist Japan, the Nationalist Army was severely weakened and the Communist Army grew during the Japanese occupation.
The Great Leap Forward's purpose was to rapidly evolve China from a farming economy into a modern society with greater ability to compete with other Western industrialized nations. The Great Leap Forward only led to the Cultural Revolution indirectly. Mao was not happy after he was criticized by Peng Dehuai for his poor economy and the horrific lack of food that resulted.
