  • Since the British officers did not recognize that the Germans wished for peace, they continued to order their men to continue to try and fight them, but when they told them "'We can't - they are good fellows, and we can't'" (86-87). The officers gave up on the truce and threated them to fire.
  • Infinitive Phrase To fight a war in which you don't want to fight, the soldiers must've felt horrible.
  • Summary- If/Then & Aha! Huh?
  • If the commanding officers had let the truce continue and not force their soldiers to kill their new friends, the denouement of the war would've been much more desirable.

  • Aha!- The truce lasted much longer than Christmas and only by Easter was when it was back to the constant artillery barrages and sniping starting up again. Aha!- Over 14 million deaths were caused during the war, soldiers and civilians alike. Huh?- Most officers did NOT want peace, they just wanted to kill the enemy.
