Welcome to Francesca's Flower show! Today we have the special guest, Arethusa Bulbosa, known as DRAGON's MOUTH! Tell us about yourself!
Thank you! I am located in the Central U.S. to Canada in bogs, swamps, fens, meadows, anywhere acidic and boggy. As for my looks, I have a bright pink flower with a spotty magenta and white labellum with a yellow center. I have a basal leaf arrangement and my height is 2-40 cm. My labellum is lobed and simple (undivided).
Fascinating! Now tell me, what is your pollination process and status for us lucky listeners?
Thank you, I attract Bombus Ternarius and Bombus Terricola. I attract them to my bristles and they crawl in. As they back up the stigma is brushed and pollonia is attached to the bee. My pollination is dependent on inexperienced bees because of how little pollen I provide.
My status globally is secure, however I am considered threatened or endangered in the Eastern U.S.
To end the night, tell us some interesting fun facts!
Alright that is a wrap, thank you for coming on Mrs. Dragon Mouth!
Thank you Francesca!
Well, I have very showy and fragrant petals and little to no pollen. After I flower I produce a solitary leaf-grass!
